But we are especially proud to have been entrusted to undertake work on important heritage buildings on behalf of English Heritage and Bicester Heritage at the former RAF base at Caversfield, near Bicester recently.

This included carefully unearthing four buried wartime air raid shelters so as not to damage the structures to allow them to be renovated by another contractor. 

The main part of the project however, was to strenghten the control tower of the former airfield built c.1926 which was in danger of collapse. This involved cutting out damaged sections of the old concrete ring beams separating each floor and reinforcing them with specially-fabricated stainless steel armatures as well as adding a new asphalt roof in line with the original roofing. 

Says Chesters & Sons Director David Chester: “We had to make the entire process appear as though we had never been there, that the repairs were essentially invisible thus maintaining the original appearance of the structure.”

The control tower project, funded by English Heritage, took six weeks to complete.

The Caversfield site is now a centre for heritage motorsports and includes workshops for the fabrication of parts for historic vehicles. It is also home to the Bicester Aerodrome Company.
